Stink bug research could bear fruit in a few years

About five years ago the brown marmorated stink bug migrated into Northern Virginia and began damaging the apple crop and other produce. New research is under way at Virginia Tech and a U.S. Department of Agriculture research center in Maryland to lure away the invasive pest by imitating the chemical pheromone it generates when eating.



Spring picnic foods more affordable than last year

If you’re shopping for spring picnic supplies, expect to be pleasantly surprised. Lower retail prices for several foods included in the American Farm Bureau Federation’s annual spring picnic marketbasket survey resulted in a slight decrease for the overall cost.

Number of US and Va. farms dropped slightly in 2015

There were 2.07 million farms in the United States in 2015, 1 percent fewer than in 2014, according to the National Agriculture Statistics Service. Those farms occupied a total of 912 million acres of farmland, 1 million less than the year before.

A recent study about precision agriculture showed that unused data equaled $8.1 billion in unrealized revenue for farmers.

Farm profits down as 2015 ends

America’s farmers probably will see lower profits this year, according to the latest forecast by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service. And Virginia farmers are likely to be among them.



Farmers need state-inspected scales to measure up

Virginia has maintained standards for equipment that businesses use to weigh and measure goods since 1661. When the state legislature convenes in January, Virginia Farm Bureau Federation will encourage lawmakers to keep the weights and measures program adequately funded.

Virginians will be able to feed their families a Thanksgiving meal for less than $4.50 per person this year, according to an informal price survey conducted by the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation.
