New tour in Virginia may help expand production of soft wheat

Virginia wheat growers’ crops will be highlighted during a mid-Atlantic tour June 10. Industry stakeholders have conducted wheat quality tours in the Midwest for decades, but mid-Atlantic soft wheat tours are still in their infancy.



Can derby winner Nyquist maintain streak for two more races?

When the undefeated Nyquist won the Kentucky Derby on May 7, he boosted his winning streak to eight races. His victory also boosted the inevitable speculation on whether he could capture the Triple Crown, which was won for the first time in 37 years by American Pharoah in 2015. 



Big Red is still running for the roses

In 1973, Virginia-born Secretariat sailed across the finish line at the Kentucky Derby on his way to a record-breaking sweep of the Triple Crown. His times in the Derby, Preakness and Belmont still stand today.



Trade speakers touched on factors that can enhance, block exports

Speakers at the eighth annual Governor’s Conference on Agricultural Trade highlighted agreements that could boost agriculture and forestry exports and animal health issues that can hinder them.



Washington County farmer receives national recognition

Mindy McCroskey of Washington County recently was named runner-up for the American Farm Bureau Federation Young Farmers & Ranchers Excellence in Agriculture Award. The competition took place at the 2016 Annual AFBF Convention, held Jan. 10-13 in Orlando, Fla.

Sam and Ashley Gardner of Bedford County recently were named runners-up for the American Farm Bureau Federation Young Farmers & Ranchers Achievement Award. The competition took place at the 2016 AFBF Annual Convention, held Jan. 10-13 in Orlando, Fla.





Farm Bureau to emphasize ag issues at Jan. 28 Legislative Day

Virginia Farm Bureau Federation volunteer leaders will speak with state legislators about issues of interest to the commonwealth’s farmers during the organization’s annual Legislative Day on Jan. 28. 



County ag development boards can address local issues

Bringing together people from different agricultural backgrounds gives agriculture a voice and strength within a county. That was the takeaway message from a Dec. 1 workshop at the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation Annual Convention on how to start and maintain local ag development boards.
