Your Virginia wine started out in a Virginia vineyard

Virginia is home to more than 250 wineries, and there’s a Virginia wine for every taste and occasion.

State law mandates that products sold as Virginia wine must be made with a percentage of Virginia-grown grapes or other fruits. Your Farm Bureau membership helps support laws and regulations that benefit the state’s wine industry.

In recent years, Virginia Farm Bureau had a role in the following:

legislation creating the Virginia Wine Board;

support for the Virginia Farm Wineries and Vineyards Tax Credit;

establishment of the Virginia Winery Distribution Co., a nonprofit, non-stock corporation that provides wholesale wine distribution services for Virginia farm wineries;

• support for Virginia wineries’ ability to ship wines directly to consumers; and

•legislation preventing local zoning ordinances from discriminating against farm wineries and other farms with agritourism activities.

Additionally, county Farm Bureau offices statewide have been serving as drop-off points for local wineries’ entries in the State Fair of Virginia’s 23rd annual Commercial Wine Competition.

Virginia is ranked fifth nationwide for wine grape production.
