WYTHEVILLE—The Wytheville Community College Young Farmers recently were recognized with a Collegiate Farm Bureau Mini-Grant of $500 from the American Farm Bureau Federation.

The WCC Young Farmers are a chapter of the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation Young Farmers Program, and one of three such AFBF grant recipients nationwide this spring.

The chapter used the grant funds to help host the Virginia FFA Appalachian Spring Rally, held at WCC in April. Chapter members organized and judged VFBF’s first-ever Youth Discussion Meet, a competition based on annual Collegiate Discussion Meets for students and Young Farmers Discussion Meets for young adults. The competitions focus on addressing issues, identifying solutions and building consensus, and they encourage participants to become well-versed in current agriculture industry challenges.

The WCC Young Farmers organized their chapter earlier in the 2017-2018 school year. There also are Collegiate Young Farmers chapters at Ferrum College, Virginia State University and Virginia Tech.
