Small ruminants are a growing presence on Virginia farms, according to a recently-released national survey. 

Demand and prices for beef and most poultry products are strong, but many challenges are creating uncertainty for both livestock producers and consumers.

As demand for beef grows, cattle farmers want consumers to share in their expectation of quality, with confidence in product safety, humane practices and sustainability.

To help address an ongoing shortage of veterinarians who work with farm animals, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has nominated five shortage areas where veterinarians can apply for financial assistance.
