Hurricane season is six months long. Is your home ready?

Taking some commonsense steps in advance can pay off in peace of mind when the annual Atlantic hurricane season rolls around each June.

The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety makes the following recommendations for pre-hurricane prep.

Shutters

Install the hardware needed to put up shutters or pre-cut plywood to protect windows and doors before a storm is on the way. This will allow for easier installation when it’s needed.

Surroundings

Note any loose items you would need to bring inside, like garbage cans and lawn furniture, and pick up any debris in the yard that could act as a projectile in high winds.

Trees

Trim your risk of damage by cutting weak tree branches and branches that are positioned over structures.

Seals

Make sure caulking around windows and doors is in good shape and not cracked, broken or missing. Fill any holes or gaps around pipes or wires that enter the building.

Roof

Inspect your roof and overhang for signs of wear or damage. Have your roof inspected to make sure the sheathing is well-connected.

Attached structures

Have porches, carports, entryway canopies and storage sheds inspected to make sure they are firmly attached and in sound structural condition.

Sump pumps and drains

Inspect sump pumps and drains to ensure proper operation. If a sump pump has a battery backup, make sure the batteries are fresh.

Generators

Prepare and test your generator before a storm strikes.

Supplies

Don’t wait until the last minute to gather all of the emergency essentials on your hurricane supply list.

Insurance

Make sure you know what you're covered for by scheduling a review with your insurance agent today!
